Dr. Dre says he uses AI as a second pass — not a replacement producer

Dr. Dre has confirmed that he uses AI while producing music, but his description is narrower than the claim that he asks a model to make complete songs. In a joint New York Times interview with Jimmy Iovine, Dre said he uses it “as a tool to see what it would do with what I just did.”

That suggests an iterative workflow: make something first, pass it through an AI system, then evaluate the alternative. Dre did not name the model, identify the material he supplies or say whether any generated result has survived into a released recording.

He compared resistance to AI with the early reaction to drum machines and synthesizers and called the technology another creative tool. He also argued that people who view it as a threat have trouble creating — a deliberately provocative opinion, not evidence about the technology's effects on musicians.

The workflow matters more than the label

Iovine said there are “closet AI producers” who use the technology without acknowledging it and cited Timbaland as another producer working with AI. The interview did not establish whether those sessions involve composition, arrangement, sound design, voice transformation, stem processing or reference demos.

Those distinctions matter. Using AI to audition a variation of a producer's own work is not the same process as prompting a finished track, and neither description answers questions about training data, permission or credits.

Dre's disclosure is useful precisely because it moves the conversation one step beyond “AI was used.” A meaningful production credit would still need to identify what entered the system, what came back and which part of that output reached the master.
